Do hair sprays cause alopecia?

fijadores-de-pelo-y-caida

We keep hearing that hair fixatives are one of the causes of hair loss. But to what extent is this statement true? In fact, the healthier our hair will be if we don’t use artificial products on our heads, is that true? We explain if hair fixatives cause alopecia below.

Gel and waxes

Hair gel and wax are some of the most common products men use to style their hair. Gels are usually liquid-type fixatives that can stick to the scalp if we use too much. This prevents the skin on the head from breathing and shrinks the hair follicles.

In the case of waxes, they are fatty products that our head will absorb. Ideally, apply it only to the ends of the hair with your fingers so that it does not touch our scalp.

To maintain hair care after using gel or wax, it is recommended to wash the hair at the end of the day, thus removing the product.

Lacquer and foam

Both fixatives usually contain alcohols, especially lacquers. This is done to thicken the product and kill harmful bacteria. However, we must remember that alcohol can dry out our hair and lose its shine, removing part of its natural moisture.

Lacquer is an aerosol that diffuses small particles of fixative in our hair that usually disappear after brushing. Although the foam is very gassy, it will gradually disappear after application.

The residue that remains after using these products at the end of the day can affect the health of our hair if we don’t wash it.

Does it cause alopecia?

There is no evidence that these products cause hair loss. If we misuse them, if their quality is questionable or if they contain excessive amounts of alcohol or silicones, they can cause hair loss. But usually, hair that falls out like this will grow back.

Hair loss is caused by other factors, such as genetics. Generally speaking, it is hair loss that is gone forever.
